What criteria do you use when choosing a venue for lunch? Cost? Convenience? Ambiance?
WelI, I often go out to lunch with my friend who has severe mobility difficulties and our main criteria is “where the hell do we find a place to park that doesn’t involve a fifty yard walk (on crutches) over loose gravel, stairs or wet surfaces. But, I hear you say, surely there are designated parking spaces for people with mobility difficulties. HA! Yes, there often are, often in the most inaccessible area of the car park, yards away from the entrance and they are usually full. HERE COMES THE RANT…why are some lucky people so selfish? the other day we arrived outside a large public building and approached the designated space, only to see a youngish man with apparently functional legs,park his car in it and then RUN to the main entrance. Now, I know that not all disabilities are visible or immediately apparent, but this was too much. I marched into the building and asked if everyone using the disability bays really needed them, sure enough, after a couple of phone calls, two persons sheepishly removed their vehicles to other parts of the car park. This happens all the time.
I feel like carrying a bag full of stickers like these around with me.

I watched a disabled woman telling off someone who did that just a couple of days ago. I agree with you. It is inconsiderate and potentially a big problem for the people who really need to be close.

Why are people selfish? That’s a huge multi-layered complex question. 1. our multi-ethnic culture does not have a unifying concept of others as do many older, unified cultures. Marketing and media says faster, bigger, flashier, prettier, more is the winner. 2. Even if once we had some kind of common decency idea, it was before we became multi-ethnic, multi-cultural. And if it’s not taught to children, it doesn’t take hold. And that’s only the short version. And I also agree the signs could be much different and stronger.
